Saltaire Graffiti

Walking along the Leeds-Liverpool canal through Saltaire is never dull or boring... there is always something new or interesting to catch one's eye.  Today this little blue mermaid chalk graffiti seems to have appeared out of nowhere, I'm sure it is a recent addition to the stone wall, and quite pleasant to look at as well.  Not quite sure what "deny everything" means though !!

This image of the Leeds - Liverpool Canal was taken from the bridge above it at Saltaire.  This part of the Canal seems to freeze over quite easily, whereas on the other side it is flowing freely.  Being taken at 5.30pm, it looks like a black and white, but it was taken in colour.  I love the reflections of the trees here and there as it begins to thaw.

I have now completed my mission of taking a photo of the Leeds-Liverpool Canal at Saltaire on the same day of each month from approximately the same place on the canal for the year of 2012. The weather has been kind to me over the year, as it has never stopped me from venturing out on the 5th day of each month, and I cannot remember it even raining on those particular days. 

 

I think the coldest day of all was today. Such a lovely crisp morning, but the chilly wind sent me back inside very quickly.

Just happened to catch this couple as they stood quietly beside the canal at Saltaire yesterday. I love the peaceful feeling this image portrays. I wonder what they were thinking about?

Autumn Reflections

 The Leeds-Liverpool Canal at Saltaire always produces something for the photographers eye, no matter what time of the day, month or year.  I decided to take a different angle on these trees reflected in the water, just to give the viewer another perspective on the wonderful colours of autumn.

My husband and I enjoyed our trip yesterday afternoon along the Leeds-Liverpool Canal from Hirst Wood in Saltaire to Shipley.  It was part of the Multi-Story Water Theatre along the River Aire and Leeds-Liverpool Canal which is a new, 3 part theatre performance dramatising the history of environmental change in and around the River Aire, in the Shipley area.

 

It was quite unique in that it is a mobile way of telling stories about the local people living close to the Aire, and engages audiences and local residents in a creative conversation around questions of river stewardship and flood resilience.

 

Audiences could choose between a musical boat ride on the canal, and two guided walks along the Aire - one in the greener area of Saltaire, the other in the post-industrial centre of Shipley.

 

As we cruised along, Eddie Lawler, locally known as "the bard of Saltaire" entertained us with his songs about the Bradford Beck and the navvies that built the canal,and actor David Smith amused us with his commentary.

 

The production was directed by Simon Brewis, Associate Director with Red Ladder Theatre Company.

Multi-Story Water is part of the AHRC's umbrella programme Researching Environmental Change. The project is a collaboration between researchers in arts and sciences: Stephen Bottoms (Professor of Contemporary Theatre and Performance at Manchester University) is leading the project in Yorkshire, while Lindsey McEwen (Professor of Environmental Management at the University of the West of England) is heading up a parallel project in Bristol.
Stephen stated:
"Site-specific theatre practice has acquired increasing recognition in recent years. Such work often takes place in exciting environments, but it’s quite rare for it to explore environmental themes and issues – even though these are increasingly pressing for all of us, as the crazy weather and flooding in Yorkshire this summer showed. With Multi-Story Water, we’re trying to look at the way Shipley’s waterways connect people up in an area that can appear quite disconnected, socially. And people in the area, we’ve found, have a lot to say about this!”





Oops, wrong way



It must be school holidays.... kids in canoes having fun on the canal. Not too sure about the one heading for wall though, think he needs a bit more practise.

I often wonder what happens when a canal boat arrives and is presented with a "gaggle" of canoests in front of it, all paddling madly in different directions across the canal !!

Canal Boats ?

Something a little different from the norm to see these two "more conventional" boats (as I call them) moored in the canal at Saltaire this August.  They were a pleasant distraction to the usual narrowboats and broad-beam barges that I see passing through the area.

Fire on the canal

Spotted this paper boat on fire in the Canal on Wednesday 18 July whilst looking out my window.  It was set alight by Teachers with a group of school children and placed into the canal, it quickly burnt away as it moved slowly down the canal.  I just wonder what it signified ?

Queens Jubilee Weekend

The Ice Cream Boat decked out for the Queens Jubilee Weekend.  Although the weather was rather disappointing it didn't stop a constant stream of visitors to Saltaire over the weekend.  The trees along the canal are now in full leaf making a stoll along the canal very pleasant indeed. Roberts Park was also popular with cricket to watch, or just chilling out with a coffee at the Half Moon Cafe.
